The Democratic National Committee has barred Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard from participating in the next Presidential debate by changing its rule that candidates need only one delegate to qualify.
Gabbard, who is one of three candidates left in the race besides former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, earned two delegates in the territory of American Samoa during Super Tuesday. Since then, the DNC is now requiring that candidates earn at least 20% of the delegates allocated so far in order to debate on CNN next Saturday. Gabbard is now calling on Biden and Sanders to demand she has a spot on the stage.
.@JoeBiden @BernieSanders I’m sure you would agree that our Democratic nominee should be a person who will stand up for what is right. So I ask that you have the courage to do that now in the face of the DNC’s effort to keep me from participating in the debates. #LetTulsiDebate

The move by the DNC to exclude Gabbard from the debate appears to be an intentional attempt to sideline her campaign, despite many of her policies aligning with the progressive ideals of the Democratic Party. It is important to note how Gabbard is the last candidate that is a woman of color and a veteran, which are two demographics that the Democrats claim to be champions of. The parties blatant snub of Gabbard is further proof that the Democratic Party’s passion and so-called advocacy for minorities are superficial, and only care about marginalized groups when it’s convenient for them. When the party is given an opportunity to present a candidate like Gabbard, who checks all their boxes, they pass up on it, instead favoring two older white men.
Throughout the race, Gabbard has been a frequent critic of the party establishment, even going as far as to sue Hillary Clinton for defamation when she accused her of being a Russian asset. The establishment is currently favoring Joe Biden, a lifelong politician who has been a loyal party member for decades. By putting Gabbard aside, the party can focus on taking down Sanders, a registered independent who considers himself to be a Democratic Socialist. Even though Gabbard’s policies are considered far-left, her composed nature and her ability to communicate to both sides of the aisle have made her appealing to some moderates. Establishment Democrats might even be scared that her participation in the debate would cause her to surge in the remaining primaries, creating a contested convention and undermining Biden.
Regardless if you are a Democrat or a Republican, it is reasonable to believe that the DNC is taking questionable steps in order to stop Gabbard’s campaign.
